In a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is gearing up for a new green bunkering project, directing its focus towards Mexico. The Danish investment firm has unveiled plans to collaborate with Mexican authorities to establish green hydrogen and green maritime fuel infrastructure in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the country’s narrowest stretch connecting the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico.
Crafting the "Helax Istmo" Project
CIP’s latest endeavour, known as the “Helax Istmo” project, will be carried out in partnership with the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) and the Mexican Navy (SEMAR). CIIT oversees the comprehensive development of rail, road, and port infrastructure spanning the 125-mile width of the isthmus, encompassing key ports like Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos. Beyond its infrastructure mandate, CIIT plays a pivotal role in stimulating private industrial investment, aligning with the broader goals of green and sustainable initiatives.
Under the leadership of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a program has been set in motion to rejuvenate rail connections along the route. The recently reinstated “Tren Interoceanico,” also known as Line Z, resumed passenger operations in September, laying the groundwork for enhanced connectivity.
Trailblazing Green Maritime Fuels
Ole Kjems Sørensen, partner at CIP and co-head of Growth Markets Funds, emphasized the significance of the “Helax Istmo” project, stating, “This MoU showcases our long-term commitment to Mexico through the development of a pioneering project that offers green maritime fuels at scale.” The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) symbolizes a collaborative venture between CIP and Mexican authorities to instigate a sustainable transformation in the region.
While anticipation surrounds the project, specifics such as cost, size, location, and output remain undisclosed. CIP has outlined that the proposal will undergo consultations with indigenous groups and social stakeholders, adhering to Mexican law. These consultations are slated to commence early in the new year, underscoring the commitment to inclusive and responsible development practices.
As CIP ventures into the realm of eco-friendly bunkering solutions, the “Helax Istmo” project emerges as a beacon of sustainable development in Mexico’s maritime landscape. With the potential to reshape the region’s energy infrastructure, this initiative highlights the significance of international collaborations in advancing the global agenda for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
